Abstract:
The obesity epidemic has been a crucial health concern over the past few decades. Multiple contributing factors have been identified at various levels: genetic, biological, environmental, social, economic etc. In many ways obesity presents some similarities with substance dependence and abuse. The term “co-dependency” originates from the realm of addiction. Co-dependency mechanisms can also appear between parents and children and enable obesity.
Biography:
Sam Vaknin is the author of "Malignant Self-love: Narcissism Revisited" and other books about personality disorders. His work is cited in hundreds of books and dozens of academic papers. He is Visiting Professor of Psychology, Southern Federal University, Rostov-on-Don, Russia and Professor of Finance and Psychology in CIAPS (Centre for International Advanced and Professional Studies). He spent the past 6 years developing a treatment modality for Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD). Over the years, with volunteers, it was found to be effective with clients suffering from a major depressive episode as well.

Atique Ahmed is a consultant Psychiatrist and Child Psychiatrist, who finished her Master in Psychiatry in 2004 (Universite Catholique de Louvain, Belgium). She worked in France as a ‘praticien hospitalier’ in Child Psychiatry and for the World Health Organization, before joining the research department in Trinity College (Dublin, Ireland) in 2011. He has been a lecturer in France (IFSI) since 2004 but has also joined the College of Psychiatrists of Ireland in 2012.

Dr Ioannis Bellas earned his medical degree from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece and completed his residency training at Department of Psychiatry of the University General Hospital of Alexandroupolis. The last three years he is a psychiatrist for the Society of Social Psychiatry P. Sakellaropoulos in North Eastern Greece.

Through a career in academic, public policy, clinical, and administrative roles, Dr. McQuistion’s expertise concerns community-based systems of care. He has extensively published and taught on community mental health and the needs of marginalized populations, especially regarding recovery orientation, advocacy, clinical engagement, psychiatric rehabilitation, and substance misuse. He completed Residency at NYU Medical Center and the Public Psychiatry Fellowship at Columbia. He is past president of the American Association for Community Psychiatry, recipient of the National Alliance on Mental Illness Exemplary Psychiatrist Award, Fellow of the New York Academy of Medicine, and Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association.
