Dr Shah received his Ph.D. from the University of Cambridge in 1971 and started his career at the University of Nairobi and Economic Policy Advisor for National Development Planning at the Kenya Ministry of Economic Planning.Since 2004 Dr Shah has been founder and Director of Zen Resort Bali, developing integrative traditional and modern medicine, including herbal medicine systems and practices to confront the human health and environmental challenges of modern lifestyles in a resort setting. These experiences over more than a decade have resulted in expertise relevant to planning international wellness tourism development projects.From 2001 to 2009 and also 1977-1983 Shah was Senior Scientist in Land Use Change and Agriculture as well as Dean of Young Scientists Summer Program and Coordinator of the United Nations Science and Policy Relations at the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis in Austria (IIASA). He was a co-author of a number FAO Agro-ecological studies that resulted in publications including the 2002 Johannesburg World Summit on Sustainable Development Report "Climate Change and Agricultural Vulnerability", World Bank 2009 Report on "Rising Interest in International Farmland Investments - Can it yield sustainable and Equitable benefits", OFID "Biofuels and Food Security" Report and World Bank Report, " Food in the 21st Century- from Science to Sustainable Agriculture and coordinating author of Agenda 21", presented at the Earth Summit in 1992.
