Title: Assessment Of Oral Cancer Knowledge Among Dental Patients

Abstract:

Background: Carcinoma of oral cavity is a global health issue with an increasing rate of incidence and mortality. Buccal mucosa carcinoma is the most common among oral cancers in south and south-east Asia, while in other areas tongue is the most common site. Oral cancer mortalities are influenced by their incidence, access to treatment, lack of knowledge & awareness, so this study was planned with the aim of assessing the awareness of oral cancer among dental patients.

Material and methods: A total of 2500 patients were included in the study during 4 months periods, demographic and clinical details of all patients were recorded. A questionnaire was prepared for assessment of dental patient’s knowledge about oral cancer. Results were recorded and subjected to statistical analysis using SPSS software.

Result: 2097 patients answered positively that oral cancer is a major reason of mortality in India, 2263 patients were willing to quit tobacco consumption in any form,1502 patients were smokers due to pleasure,997 patients included in the study showed anticipation in smoking habit cessation around them, knowledge was good among patients which reflects the better understanding of disease.

Conclusion: Such structured questionnaire-based survey will help in assessment of dental patient’s knowledge and for further organizing education- based awareness program with the aim of quitting smoke and smokeless tobacco habits and motivate them for regular oral screening.

Aamna Rahat is a pediatric dental surgeon, working as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Dentistry at SRMS Institute of Medical Sciences, Bareilly, India. She has completed her “Master of Dental Surgery” in the subject of Pedodontics and Preventive Dentistry from Bareilly International University. She is University Gold Medalist for M.D.S and done her B.D.S from Teerthanker Mahaveer University, Moradabad, India. She has Received Medal for her B.D.S Program too.
