Nurse-led innovations will help tackle global inequities, says ICN

Eliminating discrimination in health and care requires the unique insight of nursing staff, the International Council of Nurses (ICN) has said. The global nursing organisation has called for more nurse-led innovations and solutions to address health inequities, while also meeting the needs of diverse populations. The call comes in a new ICN statement, published this month, which has outlined actions nursing associations and individual nurses can undertake to tackling health inequities and discrimination. In addition, it noted that the coronavirus pandemic exacerbated inequalities that have existed in health systems and beyond, and that both staff and patients were affected. However, it argued that, as the most trusted profession, nurses were “in a precious and powerful position” to influence changes that could help dismantle structural discrimination. The statement said: “Throughout history, nurses have been at the forefront of caring and advocating for people who are dis empowered, marginalised, and undeserved.
